A year ago I never would have thought a box cake meant so much. Honestly I’m not a cake person, and especially if it’s not made from scratch. But for my friends here in Haiti it’s different. While they are thankful for birthdays, anything extravagant or even anything different than any other day is hardly possible. Some of them are thankful to have something to eat once that day. Others don’t even know their true birthday or how old they actually are.
When our last container came from the states, I had purchased some box cake mixes, intending for them to be quick and easy for missionary gatherings and such. But after spending some time here, God has revealed to me that something as simple as baking a box cake for someone can brighten their day and be a huge blessing.
Seeing the genuine smile and true gratefulness on a child’s face (or an adult’s) by giving this simple gift has really had an impact on me. Of course I can’t bake cakes for everyone here, but I pray that the love of God could be shown to each one. That they would know how great and deep the love of God is. And that while their life here is extremely difficult, God sees them and has greater things in store.
