I have not written a blog post for quite some time because I often don't know what to write.
We are on a journey of constant ups and downs. Often, the days can feel discouraging due to what is going on in Haiti and the seemingly hopeless situation. As we hear more and more tragic stories caused by oppression, violence, and just a broken system, it causes us to experience a wide range of emotion.
"Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them. And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive. But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun." Ecclesiastes 4: 1-3
While we feel thankful that we are safe and have a home, food, and necessities, we hurt for those who are being forced to flee their homes, leaving all of their belongings behind.
We can feel encouraged by the work and ministry that we are blessed to participate in daily, yet discouraged as we hear of the destruction happening to other ministries who have worked so hard to establish missions in Haiti.
We can feel safe as we go about our day, yet we never feel comfortable or relaxed as we are always anticipating danger or violence.
When you hear of a baby being taken from the arms of a loving mother and thrown into the fire, or of a father asking the police to take his life after witnessing his wife and children being killed by gangs, you can relate to the writer of Ecclesiastes 4. Although this is happening hours away from us, the fact that it is happening causes most people here to consider the realities of this fallen world.
Haiti is a beautiful nation and there are still so many good things happening despite the evil and oppression. Please continue praying for a miracle to take place. Pray for our great God to console and comfort all who call this place home, as fear creeps in and we begin to lose sight of a brighter tomorrow.
