As we begin a new year, we are grateful for the blessings God has provided and continues to provide. May we not forget His faithfulness.
Life in Haiti continues to be difficult and frustrating at times. Before coming to Haiti I was not thankful for the processes and efficiency of everyday tasks in a developed country. I didn't know any different. But now I am thankful. The products that are abundant in stores in America, are nowhere to be found in Haiti. Any government or paperwork process takes weeks or months instead of a day. Making a simple recipe often requires several substitutions. Having consistent water or power is rare.
But, life is much slower. Relationships are extremely valuable and it is completely normal to sit in the shade and chat with someone, without being worried about the time or your next task. Without credit cards and loans, everything is paid up front in cash and there is no stress of debt or bills to pay. And the hospitality and kindness shown when visiting someone is beyond anything I've experience anywhere else.
I'm thankful for the many lessons God continues to teach me as I live in this broken and beautiful place.
