The Two Sides of Haiti
The Two Sides of Haiti
Haiti, a nation marked
in the American media by violence, disaster, and poverty. A nation where perseverance,
resilience, and endurance are lived out to the extremes. A nation where souls
are continuing to trust and hope in a loving Savior.
The capital, Port Au
Prince, is currently experiencing extreme suffering, caused by gang violence
and control. Kidnappings, murders, and rapes are happening daily. In 2024
alone, there were more than 5,300 gang related deaths. Schools and churches
have been closed for years. Many have been displaced with only the clothes on
their backs (more than 700,000). Those remaining live in fear and are dealing
with trauma from what they have experienced. Families have been separated,
children have lost parents. Young children are recruited by gangs, and see no
other way to survive.
It’s hard to
comprehend, but outside the city life goes on as normal. Children go to school
and churches continue to meet. Products are bought and sold, although prices
are extremely high. The news of what is happening to friends and family in Port
Au Prince is alarming, but this doesn’t discourage believers from praying and
knowing that God can work a miracle.
At the end of 2024 many
churches gathered all night long to celebrate God’s faithfulness and provision.
These are brothers and sisters living in extremely difficult circumstances, not
knowing what tomorrow will bring, yet praising and thanking Jesus with their
whole hearts. These are men and woman raising children, and living in fear due
to insecurity and lack of government in Haiti, without the option to leave and give
their children a “normal” life in a different country. These are people who don’t
know what their next meal will be or if their children will go to bed hungry,
maybe just drinking sugar water to hold them over. These are mothers praying
that their children won’t be sick, because of the lack of functioning medical
services in the country. And these are God’s children, who trust in His
provision and protection despite life’s many challenges.
Please pray that a miracle would be done in
Haiti, God is faithful.
